Gas Detonation Takes 3 Carabinieri While Executing Eviction Procedure in Northern Italy
Three members of law enforcement were killed and more than a dozen others were hurt in an apparently premeditated gas explosion at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.
How It Happened
The explosion occurred as police and firefighters approached the property in the vicinity of the city of Verona to execute an removal notice for three siblings who were older adults.
Each of the three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri military police.
Legal Proceedings
A man and a woman were arrested at the scene and one more individual who fled after the explosion was apprehended shortly later. Each of them have been taken to the hospital.
The explosion could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the location revealed the property left as a mass of wreckage.
“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that attempts had been made to evict the three family members in the previous occasions.
Financial Context
The president of the Veneto area, the regional head, said the property was subject to an removal notice due to debts accrued by the siblings.
Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to talk with the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the house. When the police reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect a family member caused the detonation.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander the police commander told news outlets.
“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the detonation precisely impacted our officers,” he said.
Incendiary devices were also located at the site, the Interior Minister confirmed.
Injuries and Destruction
Injured individuals by the incident consisted of eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of Italy's state police and a fire services member.
According to the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.
He thought the explosion had occurred on a floor above the access point and stated to the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the incident, he mentioned officers had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the propane tanks being activated”.
Local Response
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors stated to Italian media, noting that the trio had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto united with other government officials in commemorating the three officers who had died in the service of their country.
