The New Mayor Vows a 'New Era' for NYC in First Address
In a first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an bold beginning to his administration.
An Unprecedented Mayor
The young democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.
“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.
Ignoring suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”
Governing with Socialist Convictions
Mamdani openly embraced his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my principles for worry of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.
The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.
An Ambitious Platform
Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan including:
- Free childcare
- No-cost bus transit
- A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
- A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores
The projected $10 billion price tag of these programs may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing Political Challenges
The new mayor also faces skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over controversial past tweets.
Mamdani has moved to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering city upkeep: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable transit service.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.
As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
